You computer slows down because it accumulates all sorts of data, programs and other bits of information throughout it’s operational life. It is a natural consequence that it will slow down over time until one day it doesn’t work or you replace it with a newer model. Gee, it’s a pretty tough life for your poor old computer – shape up or it’s the scrap heap for you. But there is something you can do to increase the longevity of your computer and ultimately speed it up when you are using it. This article will cover three ways how to speed up your computer.

1. Clean up your desktop – The desktop is where things go when you use them often. However if you have a lot of stuff, quite often it ends up on the desktop because you have no other place to put it. If you don’t use stuff often then take it off the desktop and put is in a folder down the tree.

2. Check up the programs that run on start up. Sometimes you manually decide that a program should run on start up. Other times, the programs makes the decision for you without asking. In the case of a firewall or an internet meter, this is fine but many other programs that you don’t need to run may also put themselves in the start up folder. Check this every so often as too many programs running chews up the RAM memory of you computer. This will slow down your computer. Removing them will speed it up.

3. Run scheduled scans. Everyone has, or at least should have, virus protection. Viruses can tinker with the very foundations that make your computer run. Removing viruses is essential. The same goes for adware. This can be frustrating as it can degrade the performance of internet usage and can use disk space on your computer. Get an adware checker and run this scan every week.
